I used to be the person that could not stand to do anything alone. I could barely stand being by myself at any point in the day. I bored myself, and my thoughts were either too empty or too loud. This all changed when I took a semester off of college. My friends were all away at college and I was, well, not so much. I went an entire semester rarely being with friends; my interactions were with parents and with customers in the pharmacy that I worked in.
And, as someone who enjoys staying active and gaining new experiences, I desperately needed to do things other than sit at home and go to work. I found my answer in the world of possibilities of being alone. I walked around parks, I wrote in my journal, I went to new bakeries alone, I explored new bookstores, and most importantly, I dated myself.
I learned to enjoy my own company and to be happy within my own skin and mind. Introspection and reflection became a good friend of mine and I found a deep fulfillment in loving myself and progressing as a human. She liked the lake. She was always in a constant battle between adventure and fear…and wanted adventure to win. Unfortunately, some days fear took that crown. She actually kind of liked the outdoors, depending on the day. Just sitting by the water, thinking about everything or nothing. She watched people or she just watched the clouds as they casually glided across the sky. She played her life by ear. And while many people criticized it, she realized she actually enjoyed it.
It gave life some everyday serendipity.
