The company went from success to success and by had patents for microscopes and binoculars. It has now grown to become one of the largest global providers of eye care products. A compound microscope is one that uses multiple lenses to collect the light from the sample and then a separate set of lenses to focus that light for the viewer. A compound microscope would be heavier, larger and cost more than a simple microscope, but would have improved numerical aperture, reduced chromatic aberration and adjustable magnification through interchangeable objective lenses.

It would also mean that more advanced illumination systems, like phase contrast is also possible. The only Bausch and Lomb microscopes that you can buy at the moment are used models on the second-hand market. As with all old objects, some of these are more collectable than others and will attract interest from collectors. Some of the models recently available for purchase include:.

This was a clear indication of the interest on that particular instrument among collectors and historians of the microscope. That interest was well justified then and it remains so today. This is why I would like to present here a review on it that, while shorter than our original article it does incorporate pertinent information collected during the intervening years.

The volume of production was enormous, possible larger than that of any of the other first-class makers, such as Leitz, Spencer, or Zeiss. Competition was fierce, but the unchallenged notion that microscope optics had reached an unsurpassable limit succeeded in stagnating the creativity of optical designers. Thus, the efforts to improve the microscope were directed towards the mechanical components of the instrument. That was the frame of mind that brought about the creation of the Model DDE figure 1.

As we will see below, they were also quite willing to give credit to their consultants. Figure 1. The anatomy of the DDE.

JOHN C. This invention relates to microscopes and more particularly to the binocularvariety thereof, one object of the invention being to provide an improved instrument of this descrip’tion comprising a simple, practical and convenient means for varying the power thereof. Another object is to provide an instrument of this character having a plurality of sets of twin objectives of varying power, together with convenient means for quickly selecting and positioning a desired set of objectives at the ends of the lens tubes in alignment with the optical axes.

A further object is to provide such an instrument having an adjustable carrier for the objectives rotatable about an axis substantially perpendicular to the median line between the lens tubes and provided Witheliicient means for detacl’iably securing and cei itering the objectives individually on the carrier. Still a further object is toprovicle an instrument of the above’ na’ture’ having a compact form of construction convenient in use and capable oibeing economically manufactured.

To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations ofpa r’ts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features” belng” pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification. In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of air instrume t embodying the” present invention;. Figure 6 is an enlarged detailed View showing the inea n’s foi” securing and entering the objective lens mounts on the carrier; H a. These parts may be of any usual or suitable character and since their particular construction forms no part of the present in vention, a further description thereof is unnecessary.

The binocular optical system is in the present instance of the variety comprising twin lens tubes 15 converging downwardly at a suitable angle. The ocular portions 16 are carried on prism boxes 17 having depending tubular portions 18 Figure 3 rotatably mounted in corresponding bores ina head carried by the arm 13 The oculars 16 as well as the tubular portions 1 8, are eccentric to the prism boxes 1 which latter contain any commoner suitable erecting prism systems, as well understood in the art and as described, for example, in the Letters Patent to Patterson et all, No.

It will be understood that the oculars and prism boxes are rotatable in their bearings in the head I9 and that by reason of the eccentricity of the parts, such rotaryor pivotaladju’stment serves to adjust the distance between the eyepieces oi the oculars 16 to the desired interpupillary distance. The optical axes of course extend through the converging oculars 16, the erecting.
